Academician Tan Sri Emeritus Professor Datuk Dr. Augustine Ong S.H. Ong,PhD

Father Of Malaysian Palm Oil



Augustine Ong Soon Hock is a Malaysian scientist, academic, and board member. He is internationally recognized in the field of lipid chemistry.He was the Fulbright-Hays Fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) 1966 to 1967. He spent a sabbatical year from 1967 to 1977 in the University of Oxford as the Visiting Professor at the Dyson Perrins Laboratory.Ong was serving as Dean, School of Chemical Sciences, and Universiti Sains Malaysia before joining the private sector where he was the former Director-General of the Palm Oil Research Institute of Malaysia (PORIM) from 1987 to 1989 and former Director in Science and Technology, Malaysian Palm Oil Promotion Council (MPOPC) from 1990 to 1996.Hock has been the Chairman of the International Society for Fat Research (ISF) since 1997 and the President of the Malaysian Oil Scientists' and Technologists' Association, Senior Fellow of the Academy of Sciences, Malaysia, Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry London and Fellow of the Third World Academy of Sciences.He has been active in research and development since 1959, with experience in the chemistry and technology of palm oil. He has 14 patents in the technology of palm oil to his credit and published more than 380 articles.He was the founding editor-in-chief of Elaeis: International Journal of Oil Palm Research and Development and is still a member of the Editorial Board.He played a significant role in the programme to counter the Anti-Palm Oil Campaign from 1987 to 1989. He has been invited to serve as a member of Research Advisory Panels on Cocoa, Forestry, Rubber and Petroleum as well as a member of International Advisory Council in Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman. He is the Founder President of the Malaysian Invention and Design Society (MINDS) since 1986. He is also President of the Confederation of Scientific and Technology Associations in Malaysia (COSTAM) and Malaysian Oil Scientists and Technologists' Association (MOSTA). He serves on the Board of several corporate organizations including University of Malaya, Malaysian-American Commission on Educational Exchange (MACEE), Country Heights Holdings Berhad. He had served as Director, HSBC (Malaysia) since its incorporation till 2004.His videos and podcasts will be on the topic of lipids and tocotrienol.

Professor Raja Affendi

Raja Affendi Raja Ali graduated with honours degree in medicine and completed the Master of Medical Science in Gastroenterology and Higher Diploma in clinical teaching from The National University of Ireland (NUI). Subsequently, he underwent higher training in the speciality of gastroenterology & hepatology and was awarded the certificate of completion of specialist training by the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland. He was also conferred a Doctorate of Medicine degree, MD from the NUI for his research on the link between inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and colorectal cancer (CRC). He is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh (FRCP) and American Gastroenterological Association (AGAF).He was awarded fundamental, transdisciplinary, industrial and international research grants to research on patients with IBD, CRC, irritable bowel syndrome and gut microbiome. He has supervised and co-supervised 34 Master and 9 PhD students as well as 10 clinical fellows in gastroenterology and hepatology. He serves as immediate Past President to the Malaysia Society of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Congress President for the Asia Pacific Digestive Week, 2021, Treasurer for the Asia Pacific Association of Gastroenterology (APAGE), educational committee member for the Asian Organization for Crohn’s and Colitis (AOCC) and clinical research committee member for the World Gastroenterology Organization (WGO).He was selected by The World Endoscopy Organization (WEO) to attend Emerging Stars Program for the year 2018 -2019. He has also completed the Oxford Executive Leadership Program (OELP) and was a Dean, Faculty of Medicine, UKM from March 2019 to March 2022. He serves as a professor of medicine, consultant gastroenterologist, leader for the GUT research group at the faculty of medicine, UKM and currently pursuing MBA.His videos and podcasts will be on the topic of microbiome.

Professor Zhang Heping (张和平)

Professor Zhang is a professor and supervisor for doctoral programmes. He has been recognised as the National Model Worker for his outstanding contributions to the country. He has also won the National Outstanding Youth Fund, selected as a leading talent in the National Scientific and Technological Innovation Programme, and the National Outstanding Talents in Agricultural Research programme. He has published over 670 scientific papers in journals such as Nature Communication, The ISME Journal, Microbiome, Molecular and Cellular Proteomics, published 8 monographs (editor-in-chief), and authorised 33 invention patents.He is currently the Director of the Key Laboratory of Dairy Biotechnology and Engineering of the Ministry of Education, Director of the Key Laboratory of Dairy Processing of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, Director of the National and Local Joint Engineering Laboratory of Lactic Acid Bacteria Screening and Dairy Fermentation Technology, Director of the Fermented Milk Processing Technology Base of the Ministry of Rural Agriculture and National Dairy Cow Director of the Technical System Dairy Processing Laboratory, member of the 14th CPPCC National Committee, and a member of the Standing Committee of the 12th Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region CPPCC.

Dr. Mahathir Mohamad (Tun)

4th & 7th Prime Minister of Malaysia



Dr Mahathir bin Mohamad is a medical doctor, politician, author, and physician who served as the 4th and 7th Prime Minister of Malaysia. Arguably he was no ordinary leader. His ideas have always been controversial and transformational. Many called him “leader extraordinaire”. As an avid reader of a wide range of subjects, he was also passionate about science. It was during his tenure as Prime Minister that science assumed prominence in national planning. The first Science Advisor was appointed during his time. Many scientific institutions were established during his term to help drive the country’s science and innovation agenda. Even to this day, his passion for science has not withered. He remains a strong believer in the power of science and innovation in nation building.
